osam Saraya, a 35-year-old Syrian-American who worked in education and helped his local community, was among the victims. A disturbing video shared online shows eight men being shot at close range by masked gunmen wearing army clothes. The video has been confirmed to be from southern Syria, in the Suwayda region.
Saraya’s brother, Kareem, was also among the dead. Relatives in both Syria and the United States say that all the adult men in their family were killed. Only women and children remain.
The attack happened on July 17 during violent clashes between Druze communities and Bedouin tribes in the Suwayda province, where most people belong to the Druze minority. While fighting has happened in the area before, this time an American citizen was among those murdered—and many believe that cannot be ignored.
So far, the U.S. government has not released a statement. But pressure is growing on the Trump administration to respond. Supporters of the family say that America must act—both to honor Saraya’s memory and to send a strong message to the Assad regime that such crimes will not be tolerated.
“An American was killed in cold blood,” said one analyst. “This is a moment for the U.S. to show leadership and stand up for human rights.”
Syrian-Americans are calling for new sanctions, international pressure, and stronger U.S. involvement to stop the violence and protect minorities in Syria.
What happens next depends on how the Trump administration chooses to respond.
