A critical meeting between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian interim government, planned for Paris under French and U.S. sponsorship, has been postponed indefinitely, raising serious concerns over the future of Syriau2019s northeast and the regionu2019s growing instability.

According to Kurdish officials, no new date has been set and no reasons were given for the delay. The talks were expected to include SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi and high-level Western diplomats to discuss possible integration of the SDF into the Syrian army under a constitutional agreement that guarantees regional security and autonomy.

The SDF has clearly rejected any demand to disarm or be absorbed without legal protections. “We are not giving up our weapons or our people’s safety,” said SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami. The group insists on constitutional recognition as a separate military force defending Kurdish and minority communities in northeast Syria.

What makes this delay more dangerous is the growing belief among Kurdish officials and observers that the so-called “Syrian interim government” is heavily influenced, if not fully controlled, by Turkey. Many of its leaders are reportedly former ISIS fighters now repackaged under Ankara’s supervision. This raises alarms that any deal without international oversight could open the door to ethnic cleansing or forced displacement of the Kurdish population.

If the Assad regime refuses to accept a decentralized solution, and if Western powers continue to delay action, the risk of violence escalates. The Kurds are not likely to stand by while Turkey-backed forces—some with jihadist pasts—attempt to take over the region.

While global media continues to focus elsewhere, the truth is that Syria remains one of the most dangerous flashpoints in the region. Any misstep in the negotiations could ignite a new phase of war, with Kurdish civilians and Druze civilians caught in the middle.
